Panzergrenadier Cover Story: SS schnelle Schützen-Regiment Langemarck

SS-Obergruppenführer Walter Krüger, an old veteran in SS-VT since 1935, became the commander of SS-Panzergrenadier Division "Das Reich" on 29 March 1943. He weared all field grey officers' greatcoat with army-style collar without "Das Reich" cuff title. Shoulder straps of rank mixed in gold and silver cord were worn on silver grey underlay that was particular designed for generals and the staff of RF-SS. His generals' peaked service cap had silver chincords and silver metallic piping.

There were three or four VW-166 schwimmwagen in the HMG section. The first and third VW-166s mounted the MG-42s with heavy tripods. The gunners and loaders all stood behind their VW-166s. The full-equipped HMG section had seven VW-166 schwimmwagen and two MG-42s with heavy tripods. The section leader took the first VW-166. Each half-section had three VW-166s and one MG-42 with heavy tripod. After the fierce fighting around Kharkov the section might left only three to four VW-166s.
This MG-42 with heavy tripod was mounted on the front seat of the VW-166 schwimmwagen. The bullet belt was loaded on the MG-42 but it was unlikely that the mounted MG-42 could fire on the VW-166. This could be for demonstration and inspection only. The half-section first MG gunner stood behind the VW-166 and his mounted MG-42. He weared the famous SS "tiger jacket" camouflage smock and matching helmet cover with dark brown autumn/winter spot pattern.
This SS officer might be the commander of the machine gun company. He weared the M1942/1943 field-tunic with silver SS service insignia on black collar patch over his right dark green collar. The silver shoulder strap can not be interpreted for his rank. His officers' peaked service cap had silver chincords but no white piping.
