Cover Story: In Memory of Operation Market Garden 80 Years

20 September 1944 morning, Son, Major Freiherr von Maltzahn sent his Panzergrenadiers to take the bridge by surprise. Major General Maxwell Taylor had great concerns about German counter attack. The 506 PIR set perimeter between Son and Esp/Eindhoven (just south of Wilhemina Canal) and beat off Panzergrenadiers of PB 107. One hour later Major Freiherr von Maltzahn sent his Panthers to support his Panzergrenadiers to attack the bridge at Son again. This time PB 107 seemed success to their mission because the fire power of Panthers dominated traffic of the bridge. The 506 PIR called for help and ten Cromwells tanks from British 15th Hussars Regiment (15 HR) of 11th armoured divison (11 AD) responded from north of Son (1). They soon blasted the attack of PB 107 to ground and four more Panthers were left behind. The PB 107 pulled back to Nuenen again and the traffic of bridge at Son were opened again at noon.

20 September 1944, afternoon, Eindhoven, the British 44th Royal Tank Regiment (44 RTR) marched on the main road from Eindhoven to Nuenen to deal with PB 107. After they crossed the bridge over Dommel River the tanks deployed on a broad front from Nuenen to Nederwetten. The 506 PIR also supported the British tanks from Son toward Nuenen (2). There were fierce fighting between British tanks of 44 RTR and Panthers of PB 107. Both sides inflicted considerable loss and British tanks withdrew back to Eindhoven. However, PB 107 also retreated from Nederwetten to Nuenen and lost 2 more Panthers.

20 September 1944, night, Nuenen, the last elements of PB 107 had arrived from Venlo but Major Freiherr von Maltzahn realized the British tanks and 506 PIR had arrived in Heeze, just south of Nuenen, and Someren, just south of Helmond, and PB 107 would be caught from behind (3). Major Freiherr von Maltzahn decided to pull back his PB 107 in next morning.
