Panzergrenadier Cover Story: In Memory of Operation Market Garden 80 Years
22 September 1944, morning, Veghel, British reconnaissance cars spotted four Panthers in nearby (1). Under raining weather the Panthers from PB 107 supported the infantry in front of them (2) and were followed by Panzergrenadiers (3). They marched from Gemert toward Erp and broke through the defense lines of US 501 PIR in Erp (4).
It happened here: the PB 107 attacked from Gemert, through Erp, to Veghel.
22 September 1944, noon, the Panthers reached the main road between Veghel to Uden and turned south toward the bridge over Aa River. They fired on Allied vehicles at will all along the main road. For the first time, PB 107 finally completed their mission to cut off the Allied vital route (2). Soon after noon 506 PIR, their old friend and foe, was brought to Veghel with 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (327 GIR) and several anti-tank guns. They manage to knock out a Panther after hitting the tracks (1).
22 September 1944, afternoon, the PB 107 tried another push toward Veghel and was beaten off until night because the Allied gathered three infantry regiments (501 PIR, 506 PIR and 327 GIR), artillery and tanks of British 44 RTR at Veghel (2).
