Panzergrenadier Cover Story: In Memory of Operation Market Garden 80 Years

23 September 1944, morning, the sky was clear, Allied aircrafts dominated the battle fields, but the anti-aircraft half-tracks in the PB 107 proved their values to provide protection. The Panthers of the PB 107 launched another attack from Erp toward south of Veghel. But the British had prepared and another tank dual happened in Havelt. The Panther of battalion commander Major Hans-Albrecht von Plüskow was knock out by Sherman tank of British Leutnant Charles David Walter Arseneault and he died intantly (aged 34). The Sherman tank of British Leutnant Charles David Walter Arseneault was also knock out by another Panther but he was lucky to survive (1). The PB 107 lost another 4 Panthers and the attack failed.

It happened here: the tank dual in Havelt.

23 September 1944, afternoon, because the PB 107 launched several attacks within 2 days the Allied had to take every measurement to contain the situation. The Americans air lift part of the the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (327 GIR) between Veghel and Vokel, the British also sent tanks from Vokel toward Boekel, the 327 GIR joined the fight after they touched down on ground. The British tanks and American paratroopers also lauched counter attack from Veghel toward Erp to eliminate the threat of the PB 107.

All these counter attacks were repelled by Panzergrenadier Battailon of the PB 107 but it cost the life of their commander Hauptmann Kurt Wild (aged 30) (2). The SS-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 10 (subordinated to the KG Walther) came to aid for the defense in Boekel in the evening and the PB 107 finally hold the line between Erp and Boekel (3). Within one day the PB 107 lost two battalion commanders and suffered severe loss.
